Yesterday the FBI raided Donald Trump’s Florida home at Mar-a-lago, although the former president was in New York at the time. The reason for the raid is said to be likely related to the ongoing investigation into whether Trump illegally mishandled confidential documents after leaving office. In February, the National Archives, which is a government agency in charge of managing presidential records, asked the Justice Department to look into him, as there were suspicions that he had destroyed or taken some materials instead of turning them in as required.

Trump says he’s already co-operated with the investigation, and so the raid was unnecessary. He called this “prosecutorial misconduct” and an attempt to prevent him from running for president again in 2024. In addition to this investigation, Trump is also being investigated for his role in attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential results as well as the capitol riots during the certification process that saw Biden take over the presidency.

The three men convicted of murdering 25 year old Ahmaud Arbery have again been given life prison sentences for their crimes. They were already convicted by a state court and given life sentences, and now a federal court has also ruled for similar sentencing. Apparently this type of tactic is used to act as a backup just in case of any unexpected issues with the state ruling that might undo their sentencing - say maybe a mistrial or court error or something like that.

The men were found guilty after they chased, shot, and killed Arbery, who was out for a jog. The men said they thought Arbery has been committing crimes around the neighborhood, and that particular night saw him trespassing a house under construction. The men chased after him in their trucks and one of them shot him with a shotgun as another filmed it. Authorities revealed later that Arbery had committed no crime and was unarmed.

Two of the men were a father/son duo, and the other was a neighbor who joined the pursuit, but was not armed, therefore only resulting in 35 years as opposed to life like the others. They were found guilty of murder, hate crimes, and attempted kidnapping. They will be serving their time in the Georgia Department of Corrections which just happens to be the subject of a Justice Department investigation into violence between inmates. For this reason, the defense attorneys are asking to move the men to a federal prison instead, although it’s unknown if the judge will allow it.

Singer and actress Olivia Newton-John passed away yesterday at the age of 73 from breast cancer. She was best known for playing the lead Sandy in the musical Grease opposite John Travolta, which is one of the highest grossing movie musicals ever. The year it came out in 1978, it was the second best-selling album of that year, only losing out by the soundtrack for “Saturday Night Fever” which also happened to star Travolta. She also won four Grammys, and had ten Top Ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

Olivia was born in Cambridge, England. Her grandfather was the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Max Born, and her father had been an MI5 intelligence officer during WW2 and afterwards served as headmaster of Cambridgeshire High School for Boys. When she was 6, she family moved to Australia where she began performing for local radio and TV shows before returning to Britain and then later heading to the US to further pursue her singing career.

In 1992, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, where she became an advocate for cancer research. She created the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, which focuses on plant-based treatments and also opened a cancer research and wellness facility in Australia. In 2017, she revealed that her cancer had returned, and in 2018 published a memoir called “Don’t Stop Believin”.

She leaves behind a husband and daughter.

Earlier this month, the country of Nepal announced that wild tiger conservation efforts have proven successful, saying that the tiger population has increased by 40% in just the last seven years, and doubled since 2010 - from 121 tigers to 355 tigers this year. These stats are the result of cracking down on poaching and illegal trade, working with local communities, and protecting tiger habitats. In 2010, at a St. Petersburg Summit, Nepal set the goal of doubling wild tiger numbers by this year, which is the Chinese Year of the Tiger. At that time there were only 3,200 left, down from around 100,000 a century ago. With wildlife populations in decline around the world, these results are giving conservationists hope that action can indeed be taken to turn things around.
